DAR ES SALAAM, April 26 (Xinhua) — Tanzania earned 191 million U.S. dollars from the sale of spice crops in domestic and international markets to date during the 2025/2026 financial year, the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) said on Sunday.
Irine Mlola, director general of COPRA, announced the figure at the first National Spices Stakeholders Conference held in the eastern region of Morogoro, noting that Tanzania remains among the world’s leading producers of spices, ranking third globally in cardamom production and fifth in cloves.
She added that global demand for spices is estimated at 11 million tonnes annually, with key products such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and black pepper accounting for around one million tonnes.
Despite its strong global position, Mlola said that Tanzania’s current production, estimated at 20,282 tonnes annually, remains low. The government aims to increase spice production to 50,000 tonnes by 2030 through improved farming technologies, enhanced market systems and stronger value chains. ■
