MEXICO CITY, April 28 (Xinhua) — Former Spain and Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales has parted ways with Monterrey after almost three years with the Mexican club.

The 35-year-old posted a video on social media on Tuesday in which he expressed gratitude to Monterrey’s fans.

“Saying goodbye to a place that has felt like home is never easy, which is why I struggle to find the words,” Canales said. “I arrived at Rayados with great excitement to live an important stage of my professional career, and from day one I felt the love of these fans.”

Canales scored 46 goals and provided 22 assists in 118 appearances for Monterrey following his July 2023 move from Real Betis.

The announcement came after Monterrey finished 13th in the Liga MX Clausura tournament, missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade. ■
