ABUJA, April 28 (Xinhua) — The newly completed headquarters complex of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja was handed over to the regional bloc Tuesday, marking a milestone in regional integration and China-Africa relations.

The China-aided project, popularly known as the “Eye of West Africa,” centralizes operations of the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Parliament, and the Community Court of Justice, which were previously scattered across the Nigerian capital. The project was funded through a grant from the Chinese government.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, described the edifice as a project that symbolizes the profound bond between China and Africa, noting it was completed in just over 1,200 days and transformed a visionary blueprint into reality.

“The building harmonizes the excellence of Chinese architectural technique with the unique culture of West Africa,” Yu said, adding that China remains a steadfast partner in Africa’s pursuit of modernization, operating on principles of non-interference and mutual respect.

ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, who received the keys on behalf of the regional bloc, praised the “meticulous craftsmanship” of the Chinese contractors, and commended the completion of the project, given the scale and complexity of the infrastructure.

“This new headquarters will serve as a fitting instrument to drive the regional integration process, fostering the enhanced peace and prosperity for all ECOWAS citizens,” Touray said, noting that the unified location would significantly enhance administrative efficiency and reduce operational costs.

The facility features a central office block flanked by two wings, an 800-seat conference center, amenities that include a daycare center, a clinic and a helipad. ■
