TRIPOLI, April 28 (Xinhua) — Violent clashes erupted at dawn on Monday between armed groups in the city of Al Ajaylat, 80 km west of the Libyan capital Tripoli, raising concerns over a potential deterioration of the security situation.

Local media reported that the confrontations involved gunmen affiliated with groups from the cities of Al Ajaylat and Al Zawiya, about 47 km west of Tripoli, and heavy weapons, including mortar shells, were used, causing damage to several homes.

Videos circulating on social media showed a widespread presence of armed elements and mobilizations across several areas, while gunfire continued to be heard between the two sides.

Amid the clashes, educational institutions in Al Ajaylat announced a temporary suspension of classes to ensure the safety of students. No official statements have yet been issued clarifying the current circumstances of the clashes.

Al Ajaylat is considered one of the areas witnessing active smuggling operations, including irregular migration and fuel smuggling, which have contributed to the spread of armed groups and the recurrence of such confrontations.

Forces affiliated with the Government of National Unity had previously launched security operations in the city to combat smuggling and organized crime, although these operations sparked controversy due to reported damage to civilian property.

Since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been split between two governments — the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and the eastern-based administration appointed by the House of Representatives. Internal clashes frequently erupt, resulting in casualties. ■
