ATHENS, April 25 (Xinhua) — Greece and France on Saturday signed nine agreements here during a two-day visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, advancing bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

Among the agreements was an enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense, security, migration, economy, investment, energy, innovation, technology, environmental protection, education and culture.

A key outcome was the renewal of the strategic partnership on defense and security which was originally signed in 2021. The updated agreement includes a mutual defense assistance clause, providing support in the event of a threat to the sovereignty of either country.

At a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron highlighted the importance of bilateral ties, noting that Greece stands on the front line of several major challenges facing Europe.

Mitsotakis said Macron’s visit had sent a clear message of continued commitment to the principle of “Greece and France, alliance,” adding that the two sides would further strengthen cooperation under this framework.

On international issues, the two leaders reiterated calls for an end to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Macron said both countries would contribute to ensuring the freedom and safety of maritime navigation after the end of the conflicts.

Earlier in the day, the two leaders visited the port of Piraeus where they inspected a French-built frigate recently acquired by Greece, along with French-made fighter jets. ■
